The president questioned the journalist's presence, stating, "You shouldn't be here," and added, "It's an honor to be here, I'm surprised that CNN is here covering me." Trump reminded the reporter of the network's exclusion from White House press events, saying, "You said you weren't gonna cover me, you shouldn't be covering me."
During the exchange, Trump asserted that the country is "making a lot of progress" and "doing really, really well." When asked by another reporter about his message to Vladimir Putin, Trump responded emphatically, "Settle the war."
The confrontation occurred days after the Trump administration barred CNN, along with MS NOW and Politico, from covering White House events, citing coverage deemed "fake news." The dispute escalated on Monday when these outlets filed lawsuits against the administration, alleging a violation of First Amendment rights. In solidarity, the broader TV pool, comprising ABC, CBS, Fox, CNN, and NBC, announced a boycott of White House events.
