Trump Claims Prices Are Falling, Critics Cite Data to the Contrary

Critics are challenging former President Donald Trump's assertions that prices for common goods, including groceries, are decreasing. Trump stated on Sunday night that "with the exception of oil... everything is going down." Earlier the same day, he claimed, "Prices for groceries have come way down from Biden. Almost every price has come way down."

CNN fact checker Daniel Dale disputed these claims, stating on X that "Overall grocery prices are up 3.4% since Jan. 2025, and way more grocery items are up than down." Dale provided data indicating price increases for various grocery items and categories since the beginning of 2025.

While acknowledging that egg prices saw a temporary decrease due to a bird flu outbreak, Dale noted that "the overwhelming majority of items have gotten more expensive." He added that while grocery prices tend to rise regardless of the president, Trump is inaccurately claiming grocery deflation.

Other critics on social media also reacted to Trump's statements. Some questioned his understanding of economic realities, while others pointed out the discrepancy between his claims and their own experiences with rising grocery bills. One user criticized the logic of claiming oil prices are lower while gas prices remain elevated, noting that lower crude oil costs do not automatically translate to lower gasoline prices for consumers.

Trump's remarks about oil prices and Iran were also met with skepticism. He claimed that oil prices were lower than during the Biden administration and that the conflict with Iran was nearing resolution, which critics suggested was an inaccurate portrayal of the geopolitical situation. Some critics also drew parallels to previous statements made by Trump regarding Iran's nuclear capabilities, questioning the timeliness and accuracy of such pronouncements.
