President Donald Trump asserted aboard Air Force One on Wednesday that he had settled a conflict between the Congo and Rwanda, claiming it resulted in approximately 15 million beheadings.
"I mean, think of the wars I settled," Trump told reporters. "Eight. Wars that were going on for 30 years. Even if you look in the Congo, the Congo versus Rwanda, I settled it after 14 years and about 15 million people had their heads chopped off. I settled that one. I settled eight wars."
There is no evidence to support the claim that the intermittent conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, ongoing since the 1990s, has resulted in 15 million deaths, nor that this number were beheaded. Trump made the statement after attending a NATO summit in Turkey.
The former president also reiterated his past claims about the Norwegian Nobel Committee, stating that he should have won the Peace Prize over past recipients. He alleged that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who received the prize last year, said Trump was the only one who should have won it. Trump has frequently stated that he has settled at least eight wars globally, attributing his success to his personality.
Trump has actively sought a Nobel Peace Prize during his presidency. In the past, he argued he deserved "four or five" such awards and has complained that the prize is typically awarded to liberals.
