President Donald Trump asserted on social media that Walmart had agreed to lower prices on numerous products at the request of his administration, coinciding with the retailer's announcement of price reductions on thousands of items for the summer.

Trump posted on Truth Social that he had been informed Walmart would be significantly reducing prices to "celebrate our great Country's 250th birthday." He claimed this would include a nearly 15 percent cut on a pound of ground beef, among other products, describing it as a "huge deal" for shoppers.

Walmart confirmed it was implementing price cuts across groceries, beverages, toys, clothing, and household goods, framing the move as an effort to help customers manage inflation. The company stated that customers "count on Walmart to deliver the value they need every day, and summer is no exception." Specific examples cited include a drop in the price of a one-pound roll of 73 percent ground beef from $6.74 to $5.94, and a 24-pack of Coca-Cola reduced to $9.97. Sam's Club, also owned by Walmart, is introducing more than 250 price cuts on items such as snacks and grilling essentials.

Walmart's public statements did not mention any involvement from the White House or the former president's administration, instead attributing the discounts to its annual summer affordability campaign. Industry observers note that such summer sales are typical for major retailers. These themed deals, particularly for barbecue-related items, were reportedly in place for about a week before Trump's social media post. Similar promotions, such as discounts on soda packs, have appeared in previous years.

Market strategists suggest that summer grilling promotions are a predictable part of the retail calendar, often planned months in advance. These promotions are designed to increase store traffic during busy summer weekends. While prices on staple items like burgers and buns may be reduced, retailers often see it as a strategy to encourage shoppers to fill their carts with additional, higher-margin items.

This situation represents a shift in Trump's interactions with Walmart. Several months prior, he criticized the company on social media after it indicated that tariffs could lead to price increases. Trump advised Walmart to absorb the higher costs rather than pass them on to consumers, stating that the company, which had reported significant profits, should "eat the tariffs."
