Trump Cites Peace Talks in Suspending Russian Sanctions

President Donald Trump stated that his decision to suspend several sanctions against Russia was intended to facilitate ongoing peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that he is "negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine" and wished to avoid actions that might "drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table."

The decision to block the sanctions, which were scheduled to take effect two days after the announcement, has coincided with a deepening dispute between the Trump administration and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky expressed his disapproval, telling NBC News that aligning with Russian President Vladimir Putin would constitute a "historic mistake." He has consistently advocated for an end to the conflict, asserting that Putin does not desire peace since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Zelensky also suggested that Trump's administration had withdrawn key military support.

In response to Trump's order, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev hailed it as "an important and truly historic moment," suggesting that the sanctions would have negatively impacted the U.S. and global markets.

Trump further contended that Zelensky "doesn't want to end this war, and probably never did," adding that the Ukrainian president could have secured a more favorable deal two years prior. The U.S. president had previously described Zelensky as being "more difficult to deal with" than Putin.

Relations between Washington and Kyiv have been strained since the U.S. agreed to import Russian diesel. Following this, Zelensky remarked that it was refreshing to be among "real leaders" during an address at a European Union summit.
