Former President Donald Trump described the Supreme Court's recent 6-3 ruling concerning transgender athletes as a "big win," expressing strong support for the decision that allows states to ban transgender individuals from participating in women's or girls' sports.
The ruling, which sided with the states of Idaho and West Virginia, empowers more than half of U.S. states to enforce protections for women's sports without the threat of legal challenges. Trump shared his reaction on the social media platform Truth Social, stating, "BIG WIN: The United States Supreme Court just RULED AGAINST MEN PLAYING IN WOMEN’S SPORTS. Wow! That takes that ridiculous situation off the table!!!"
The legal battle involved states, represented by the law firm Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), seeking to ban transgender athletes, while transgender athletes, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Cooley Legal, challenged these bans.
Despite the ruling, 23 states do not have laws banning transgender athletes, and some of these states have laws in place that protect their participation in girls' sports. The Supreme Court's decision effectively leaves the determination of such policies to individual states.
