Trump Calls for Prosecution if Lewandowski Wasn't Honest
President Trump stated that anyone not being honest should face prosecution, responding to reports of a DOJ investigation into former aide Corey Lewandowski.
President Trump stated Thursday that individuals who are not honest should be prosecuted, in response to reports that the Department of Justice is reviewing a criminal referral from the DHS inspector general concerning former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.
"I heard something about it, but I don’t know exactly what it is. All I know is I want my people to be honest, and if they’re not going to be honest, they have to be prosecuted," Trump told reporters at the White House. He added, "I want the people who work for this administration to be 100% honest."
Trump elaborated, "If somebody is dishonest, I consider them not only against the country, I consider that dishonest against me. So I will never do anything to stop a prosecution if somebody is dishonest."
Lewandowski, who served as a de facto chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security, was removed from his position following the dismissal of Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen in March. The president's comments come amid reports of alleged misconduct involving Lewandowski's role in DHS contracting.
Allegations have circulated regarding Lewandowski's actions within DHS, including reports of solicitations to foreign officials and dealings with the Geo Group, a private prison operator. In the past, Lewandowski reportedly stated to a source, "I’m not worried. I do whatever the f–k I want. DJT will pardon me."
Lewandowski's attorney, Adam Trigg, issued a statement saying, "Mr. Lewandowski has not been contacted by the Justice Department regarding any investigation, and he denies any wrongdoing when he was proudly serving his country in a voluntary capacity."
