Trump Body-Shames Reporter Asking About Canceled Rally
President lashes out at journalist, calling him a 'dope' and 'out of shape' after he questioned Trump's decision to skip a Kansas event.
President Donald Trump directed a harsh personal attack at a reporter on Thursday, responding to a question about a canceled Kansas rally by body-shaming the journalist and calling him a "dope."
The exchange occurred as Trump was returning from a rally in South Carolina and preparing for Halloween events at the White House. The reporter asked if Trump was skipping a planned trip to Salina, Kansas, to support Republican Senator Roger Marshall in a tight race because he was "sick of travel."
"Oh, you're sick to ask that question. You are sick," Trump told the Reuters reporter. After learning the reporter's affiliation, Trump continued, "Look at this guy. He's way out of shape. Look at how badly... You are disgusting. Put yourself in shape. You look like hell."
Trump stated that he was not attending the Kansas rally because "I don't feel like I have to go to Kansas." He added that he felt "perfect" and had been feeling that way for two weeks, noting that he had held rallies nearly every day in the lead-up to the midterm elections.
Senator Marshall is reportedly in a close contest against Democratic rival Adam Hamilton, with a recent poll showing Hamilton leading by four points. Despite the tight race, Trump indicated he would instead hold a tele-rally from Mar-a-Lago for Marshall. The President also mentioned he might travel to another state if "something else comes up."
In recent weeks, Trump has held numerous rallies across the country, including in Texas, Michigan, and Ohio, to support Republican candidates in competitive races. His campaign stops have sometimes drawn attention for going off-script, including recent remarks about rapper Nicki Minaj and comments made during a rally in Ohio.
Trump is scheduled to hold further campaign events in Florida and potentially Iowa and Michigan before Election Day.
