Rep. Andy Biggs, a former House Freedom Caucus chair endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has won the Republican nomination for Arizona governor, according to the Associated Press. Biggs secured over 70% of the vote in Tuesday's primary, leading his nearest competitor, Rep. David Schweikert, by more than 50% with nearly half the votes counted.
Biggs will now face Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who was unopposed in her re-nomination bid. Hobbs narrowly defeated the Republican nominee, Kari Lake, four years ago.
The Republican primary was marked by a combative and expensive contest. Schweikert's campaign issued mailers accusing Biggs of associating with white supremacist and antisemitic groups, which the Biggs campaign called a "desperate tactic."
Biggs, who also received backing from the political wing of Turning Point USA, largely focused on his general election campaign, participating in only one debate with his rivals. Trump's endorsements have played a significant role in the 2026 primary season, with all his endorsed candidates securing victories.
Trump's influence in key races, including those for the House majority and governorships, is expected to impact the upcoming midterm battles. The outcome in Arizona's gubernatorial race, a key swing state, is anticipated to be closely watched.
