Trump Approves Sale of 500 Patriot Missiles to Ukraine, Delivery Expected by 2032
The deal, funded by European allies and Canada, faces a years-long wait for the advanced air defense systems sought by Kyiv.
President Donald Trump has approved the sale of 500 Patriot missile interceptor systems to Ukraine, a decision made following pleas from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for expedited deliveries of air defense weaponry. However, the advanced PAC-3 interceptor systems may not arrive until 2032, according to reports.
Zelenskyy had urged Western leaders to accelerate missile shipments, stating that Ukraine needs immediate protection against ongoing Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure. He specifically requested 100 Patriot interceptors per month for the winter and suggested that allies could provide missiles from their existing stockpiles, to be replenished later by the new purchase.
The State Department announced that the deal, valued at approximately $1.6 billion, will be fully funded by Canada and European nations. While Zelenskyy praised the "strong decision," he acknowledged that deliveries under the agreement are stipulated to begin "only in a few years."
Ukraine has been seeking enhanced air defense capabilities as Russia continues to target its cities and infrastructure. The Patriot missile systems are designed to intercept incoming missiles and protect critical assets. Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the requested weapons are crucial for protecting lives "at the very moment the threat is there - when Russia is killing and destroying."
