President Donald Trump announced Sunday via Truth Social that Will Scharf, currently serving as assistant to the president and White House staff secretary, will become White House Counsel beginning September 1. Scharf will succeed David Warrington, whom Trump stated has done an "outstanding job" and is moving to the private sector.
Trump highlighted Scharf's qualifications, noting his extensive experience. "Will has done an amazing job in his current role as White House Staff Secretary, and has also served as Chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission," Trump wrote. He added that Scharf previously represented him in numerous legal cases, including at the Supreme Court during what Trump characterized as the "Biden Administration’s corrupt and illegal campaign of Weaponization." Trump also cited Scharf's background as a federal prosecutor, private practice attorney, clerk for two federal appeals court judges, and his academic achievements at Princeton University and Harvard Law School.
The president described Scharf as "Tough, Strong, and Smart!" and expressed confidence that he "will do a great job as White House Counsel!"
Will Scharf is often seen presenting documents to the president for signing and explaining their purpose. His appointment was also acknowledged by White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, who congratulated Scharf in a post on X, which was retweeted by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. "There is so much winning ahead!" Wiles wrote.
Wiles also expressed gratitude to Warrington for his tenure, noting the White House Counsel’s Office's successes, including "24 Supreme Court victories and the confirmation of 54 judges."
Conservative commentator Josh Hammer, who co-founded "Jews Against Soros" with Scharf in 2023, told Fox News Digital that he believes Trump "hit a grand slam home run with" Scharf, calling him a potential "tremendous boon to the White House counsel's office." Hammer described their organization as a response to the idea that criticism of George Soros constitutes antisemitism, asserting that Soros funds "a ton of antisemitism and anti-Israel activity worldwide."
