Loud jets from a military flyover appeared to startle President Donald Trump as Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the United States. The flyover occurred during the playing of the national anthem, with Trump and Xi standing together.
Trump, joined by first lady Melania Trump, made the decision to greet Xi at Joint Base Andrews, a departure from typical diplomatic protocol. This gesture was not reciprocated when Trump visited Beijing in May, as Xi did not meet him at the airport.
The last time an American president personally greeted a foreign leader at Joint Base Andrews was in 1962, when President John F. Kennedy met British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.
