President Donald Trump announced Friday that his administration has finalized an agreement with Denmark that grants the United States permanent control over security matters in Greenland. The announcement, made via Truth Social, indicated that the deal would also address "all other needs" in Greenland, resolving U.S. concerns.
"I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns," Trump wrote. "There will be NO COST to the United States!"
This development follows previous instances where Trump suggested the U.S. might acquire Greenland, a proposal that had previously drawn an angry reaction from Denmark. There was no immediate response from Denmark regarding the new agreement.
