Trump Announces Plan to Revitalize Historic Washington D.C. Golf Course
Former President Donald Trump revealed intentions to transform the East Potomac Golf Links into a championship-level venue, with a judge seeking clarification on the project's status.
President Donald Trump announced Sunday his intention to transform the historic East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., into a "world class" championship golf course. The project, to be designed by renowned architect Tom Fazio, aims to attract major professional tournaments and create jobs.
Trump stated on Truth Social that the Department of the Interior, under Secretary Doug Burgum, is collaborating on the overhaul of the public course, which is situated along the Potomac River near the National Mall. The redesigned course is envisioned to be capable of hosting events such as the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, and Presidents Cup. The United States Golf Association, PGA of America, and PGA Tour have been informed of the plans.
"When completed, it will be open to the Public while, at the same time, designed to the Highest Level of Golf," Trump wrote in his social media post.
The existing course is scheduled to close on November 15 for renovations, with an anticipated opening of the new course approximately 15 months later. Trump criticized the current state of the course, describing it as "old, broken, dilapidated" with issues such as diseased trees and a deteriorating seawall.
Trump also suggested the redevelopment would restore views of the capital and create "one of the Best and Most Spectacular Golf Courses anywhere in the World."
Hours after Trump's announcement, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes took note of the Truth Social post. She ordered the government to provide clarification by 8 p.m. Sunday regarding its stance in a prior court filing. In that filing, the government asserted "there is no final agency action" and that Trump had only given "preliminary thought" to rebuilding the course. Judge Reyes also mandated that two government attorneys attend an evidentiary hearing in person on Monday morning.
Previously, the redevelopment project had faced scrutiny and a temporary halt on additional tree cutting due to a legal challenge. The East Potomac Golf Links, on federally owned land, has been a public golf amenity for over a century. Trump stated the project would provide an economic boost to Washington and the surrounding region.
