Trump Announces Major Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration Set to Begin in Greenland

Former President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that “massive” oil, gas, and mineral exploration is on the verge of commencing in Greenland. Trump stated that experts have indicated the island possesses easily accessible oil reserves that are among the largest globally, though he did not provide specific details regarding the exploration plans.

This development follows a recent agreement signed last month between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland. The accord aimed to resolve tensions that arose after Trump's previous assertions of seeking control over the strategically important and resource-rich island. As part of the agreement, the U.S. military's presence in Greenland is set to expand, with provisions for two new military bases and the implementation of Trump's "Golden Dome" missile defense system. The deal also reaffirms Danish sovereignty and upholds the right to self-determination for Greenlanders.

Trump also commented on Greenland's strategic significance for U.S. defense, stating on Truth Social that any future attack on the United States would have to traverse Greenland, where U.S. defenses would intercept potential threats.

Previously, Greenlanders had protested against Trump’s policies concerning their territory, particularly in light of his past remarks about gaining control over the island. People protesting against Trump's policy towards Greenland in front of the US consulate in Nuuk, Greenland.

Trump signed a security agreement with Greenland and Denmark during last month’s United Nations General Assembly. President Donald Trump holds up the signed security agreement.
