Former President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that Iran has released an American citizen who he stated was wrongfully detained, describing the action as a "gesture of Goodwill." Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social that the individual is now safely outside of Iran and in good condition.

The woman was identified by her lawyer, Jared Genser, as Dena Karari. Genser, an international human rights specialist, confirmed on the social media platform X that his client was free and traveling back to the United States, attributing her release to "extraordinary and relentless efforts" by Trump.

According to a report from The New York Times last August, Karari, an Iranian American dual citizen, was detained in Iran in December 2024 and accused of espionage. She reportedly worked for a U.S. technology company and managed a children's charity in Iran. Although she was released from prison, her passports were confiscated, preventing her departure from the country.

The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, an organization that advocates for hostages, has stated that at least two U.S. nationals are currently being held in Iran.
