Trump Announces Energy Ceasefire Between Russia and Ukraine

President Donald Trump announced an immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, stating that both countries have agreed to stop attacks on each other's energy infrastructure.

"Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!" Trump wrote on social media platform Truth Social.

The announcement follows weeks of escalating tensions involving strikes on oil refineries and power plants. Trump has been intensifying pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cease targeting Russian oil facilities, arguing that these attacks have disrupted global diesel supplies and contributed to higher fuel prices for American consumers.

This issue has gained urgency as rising diesel prices impact American farmers, truckers, and businesses reliant on the fuel for transportation and operations. Trump has repeatedly criticized Ukraine's actions against Russian energy infrastructure, even as Kyiv maintains that targeting Moscow's oil industry is a legitimate strategy to hinder Russia's war financing capabilities.

The announcement comes after a period of strained U.S.-Ukraine relations, following a deal brokered by Trump to permit Russian diesel exports to American and global markets. Under that agreement, Russia was to supply over 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, with further shipments expected. The Treasury Department also authorized temporary sanctions relief to facilitate these supplies.

Trump contended that the agreement would lower fuel prices, while Zelenskyy criticized it as a concession to Moscow that could provide revenue for Russia's war effort. The dispute escalated when Trump suggested Ukraine should replace Zelenskyy with a leader more amenable to negotiating an end to the war, telling reporters, "I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal."

Zelenskyy has maintained that Ukraine would be willing to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries if Moscow agreed to cease targeting Ukrainian power plants and other critical infrastructure. Both countries have increasingly targeted each other's energy systems throughout the war, with Russian strikes on Ukraine's power grid causing civilian disruptions and damage to heating and business infrastructure, while Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have impacted fuel production and global energy markets.

The Trump administration has been working for weeks to negotiate a reciprocal halt to energy attacks as part of broader diplomatic efforts to end the war. In September, Trump made a similar announcement about an energy ceasefire, though Moscow did not publicly confirm it, and attacks continued.

Trump and Putin shake hands

The latest declaration raises the possibility of renewed diplomatic progress, though an energy ceasefire would not constitute a comprehensive agreement to end the fighting. It remains unclear how the agreement would be monitored or enforced. The White House had not immediately responded to requests for comment.
