Trump Announces Deal with Putin to Import Russian Diesel Fuel
President Trump stated that Russia will supply significant quantities of diesel fuel to the U.S. market to address rising energy costs.
President Trump announced Friday a significant foreign policy shift, stating that the U.S. will purchase large amounts of Russian diesel fuel to alleviate surging domestic energy costs. The announcement came via a post on Truth Social.
According to Trump, his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin resulted in an agreement for Russia to immediately supply over 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the American and global marketplace. He further stated that an additional 500,000 tons would be delivered in November, with a further 1,000,000 tons to follow shortly thereafter. Trump also indicated that Russia would deliver an additional 3,000,000 tons of diesel fuel within a short period, citing the condition of their refineries.
This development marks a pivot from recent U.S. policy toward Russia. On September 18, Trump signed the "Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026," which was set to take effect on October 19. This law imposed a 500% tariff on Russian goods and allowed for secondary sanctions on countries purchasing Russian fuel. However, many provisions within the act can be waived by the president.
Trump's administration has previously navigated a complex stance on sanctions against Russia, balancing efforts to penalize Russia's actions in Ukraine with the need to manage energy costs. The ongoing conflict with Iran has contributed to increased energy prices and inflation, leading to previous waivers on oil sanctions against Russia that were implemented in October of the previous year.
