Trump Announces $8 Billion in Relief for Farmers Facing High Diesel Costs

President Donald Trump announced an $8 billion relief package for American farmers struggling with elevated diesel prices, a move intended to support the agricultural sector as harvest season and midterm elections approach.

The "Harvest Fuel Relief" program, detailed by the Department of Agriculture, will provide "simple, proportional support to producers using a uniform formula to cover a portion of modeled losses during the 2026 crop year," according to a department statement. Payouts will be determined by Farm Service Agency data.

Trump announced the initiative at a rally in Kansas, stating, "Tonight I’m also pleased to announce that the Department of Agriculture will be launching a new Harvest Fuel Relief program, providing our farmers with $8 billion in support to offset diesel costs during this harvest season." He added that further funding would be provided if Republicans win in the upcoming elections.

Diesel prices have seen a significant increase over the past year, reaching a recent peak of $6.53 per gallon on September 22 before settling to $6.32 by October 19, according to AAA. The administration attributes the instability in oil supplies and resulting fuel cost hikes to disruptions caused by the war on Iran, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on Saudi oil facilities.

This is not the first time the federal government has offered such assistance. In December, a similar program provided $12 billion to over 560,000 farmers affected by trade wars that reduced international demand for their products.

The American Farm Bureau Federation expressed approval of the new policy. "Farmers and ranchers welcome the administration’s announcement of $8 billion in relief through the Harvest Fuel Relief program to help farmers struggling with high diesel prices," the organization stated. "We look forward to working with the president and USDA to ensure specialty crop growers, livestock producers, fishermen and others get the support they need so they can continue growing the food America’s families rely on."

However, the relief plan also faced criticism. Gary Wertish, president of the Minnesota Farmers Union, characterized the initiative as "an arsonist putting out a fire that he caused." He suggested the payments would have a limited impact, noting that prices rarely decrease once they have risen.

Despite the criticism, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins praised Trump as "the most pro-farmer president of my lifetime." She stated, "More targeted relief is coming to our farmers. This $8 billion dollar investment will help bring certainty to our farmers during this harvest so they can continue to feed our nation."
