Trump Announces $54 Billion Alaska Natural Gas Project

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that South Korea plans to invest approximately $54 billion in a natural gas project in Alaska. Trump made the announcement in the Oval Office, accompanied by Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, who is seeking reelection in a competitive race.

Sullivan, a proponent of the pipeline project, and Trump presented the investment as finalized. However, South Korean officials offered a more reserved response, stating that a commitment would depend on a thorough assessment of the project's commercial viability and adherence to domestic legal procedures. Han Jeoungae, secretary-general of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s Democratic Party, indicated that Trump's remarks might have been intended to emphasize the U.S. position.

The announcement marks the second time in recent days that Trump has publicized large-scale projects, aiming to bolster Republican Senate candidates in states he previously won comfortably but where races are now unexpectedly close ahead of the November midterm elections. On Monday, Trump announced plans for a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa, accompanied by Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson.

The Alaska project involves an 807-mile pipeline designed to transport natural gas from the North Slope to a liquefied natural gas export terminal. Trump praised Sullivan for his long-standing advocacy for the project, stating, "He’s been working on this deal and other deals in Alaska, the pipeline, for almost 20 years, and we’re now getting it done." Sullivan expressed gratitude to Trump and his cabinet for their involvement.

Sullivan's Democratic challenger, Mary Peltola, also acknowledged the project and Trump's support, noting her participation in bipartisan efforts to advance it and her intention to continue such work if elected.

These project announcements coincide with a period of declining approval ratings for Trump and broader Republican concerns about retaining control of Congress. Trump has acknowledged the need to better communicate his administration's accomplishments and plans to increase his campaigning efforts across several states.

Democrats are targeting seats in states like Alaska and Iowa as they seek to gain a majority in the Senate. The president's recent announcements come as voters express concerns about fuel prices and the economy. A late-July poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicated that about one-third of Americans approved of Trump's economic stewardship, with a majority describing the economy as poor.
