Trump and Xi Jinping Hold White House Tea Amidst Tense US-China Relations
The US President and Chinese leader met for a private tea ceremony at the White House, engaging in discussions that concluded with an agreement to extend a trade truce.
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, for tea at the White House on Friday. The meeting, described by Trump as the culmination of a "tremendous visit from two spectacular people," marked Xi's first visit to Washington D.C. in 11 years.
During a photo opportunity on the South Portico before the private meeting, a reporter pressed Trump with a question about whether he had urged Xi to cease oil purchases from Iran. Neither leader responded visibly to the inquiry. Later, during a joint address to reporters, both leaders spoke optimistically about bilateral relations.
"I see a brighter China-US future," Xi stated, characterizing his visit as highly successful. Trump echoed this sentiment, reporting that they had "made tremendous strides" and expressing confidence that "our farmers are going to be very happy."
The most concrete outcome publicly announced from the summit was an agreement to extend an existing trade truce by two months, a measure initially set to expire on November 10. The specific context for Trump's remark about farmers remains unclear, although China has previously committed to purchasing substantial amounts of U.S. agricultural goods annually.
Following the tea ceremony, the Trumps were scheduled to accompany the Xi couple to the National Archives. There, they were expected to view historical documents, including foundational American texts, in what was intended as a symbolic conclusion to the state visit. President Xi and his wife were slated to depart from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland later the same day.
