Trump and Tech Leaders Forge Voluntary AI Safety Accord

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday the signing of a voluntary accord by leading technology executives, which he characterized as a "constitution" designed to ensure the safe and responsible development of artificial intelligence. The agreement, referred to by Trump as "morally binding," was signed by top figures in the AI industry.
Signatories to the accord include Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and OpenAI President Greg Brockman, in addition to President Trump himself.
The "White House Accord on Super Intelligence: Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities" outlines a commitment from participating companies to develop their technologies safely and build public trust. The document emphasizes the responsibility of companies training and deploying frontier AI models to implement robust internal processes and controls.
The accord specifies four layers of controls and audits that each company should implement:
- Establish strong internal controls to monitor AI model capabilities and alignment, focusing on areas such as cybersecurity, biosecurity, and chemical threats, and to prevent unintended system access.
- Designate an internal team responsible for ensuring all monitoring and detection controls are functioning correctly and that identified issues are addressed.
- Engage an independent external auditor or evaluator to conduct assessments of the control systems' operational effectiveness.
- Appoint an independent committee of the board of directors to oversee reports from control teams and auditors, and to ensure remediation of any identified issues.
The agreement states that these measures will provide confidence to companies, their customers, and the public regarding the intended operation of AI technology. The participating companies have also committed to regular meetings to establish safety standards and best practices.
The accord further notes that these steps may eventually be codified into laws or regulations, but emphasizes that implementation is critical for a safe future, regardless of legal requirements. The text of the agreement suggests that while voluntary, the commitment is seen as crucial by each participating company.
