President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino have declared the 2026 FIFA World Cup a resounding success, describing it as the greatest sporting event in history.
Speaking days before the final match at MetLife Stadium between Argentina and Spain, Infantino praised President Trump and his administration for their role in hosting the tournament. "I promised you we would make a great World Cup. And, by all means, this World Cup has exceeded all expectations," Infantino stated. He noted that approximately 7 million fans have attended matches, with billions more watching on television.
Infantino further emphasized the unifying aspect of the event, saying, "The American dream came to reality. We united the world, we united the world in America. When I told you we will do a great World Cup, you told me America will welcome the world. And you did welcome the world." He added that the event had brought joy and happiness to people globally.
President Trump echoed these sentiments, calling the World Cup "the most successful sporting event maybe in the history of the world." He stated, "It's been a true honor for Americans to share our magnificent country with the world. And today, America, it's stronger and wealthier and hotter than ever before, and you're a big part of it... This has not just been and is not just the greatest World Cup of all time. It is the greatest human, social and cultural event that mankind has ever witnessed and seen."
The United States served as a primary host for the tournament, with 11 of its 16 venues hosting matches, including all quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final. Trump and Infantino are scheduled to attend the final at MetLife Stadium to present the trophy to the winning team.
Argentina aims to become the first team to win back-to-back World Cup titles since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Spain is appearing in its second final, having previously won the tournament in 2010 in South Africa.
