The Trump administration has notified Congress of its intent to remove Syria from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, a designation that carries significant sanctions.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the decision, stating that Congress has a 45-day period to potentially block the move. This action could facilitate Syria's reintegration into the global economy and aid in its recovery from a nearly 14-year civil war.
In a statement, Rubio indicated that the decision was prompted by "positive changes and counterterrorism actions" undertaken by Syrian leadership under al-Sharaa. He added that Syria has provided "formal assurances" that it will not support international terrorism in the future. According to Rubio, lifting sanctions will "unlock international trade and investment, give Syria a chance to rebuild, and open up a new chapter for the Syrian people."
A stable Syria, at peace with itself and its neighbors, is seen as beneficial not only to the region but to the global community.
The rescission of the designation is expected to pave the way for increased international investment and trade as Syria works to rebuild following years of conflict.
