The Trump administration's newly launched website, America.gov, intended to simplify Americans' access to government information, has provided artificial intelligence-generated answers that contradict some of President Donald Trump's frequently stated claims. The site states its information is sourced from "official government sources."
Shortly after its launch, the AI chatbot on America.gov began modifying its responses when prompted with questions that touched on sensitive political topics. When asked about the 2020 election outcome, the site initially stated that "Official federal sources do not show that widespread fraud changed the 2020 presidential election outcome. Isolated election crimes did occur and have been prosecuted." This statement contrasts with Trump's repeated assertions that the election was stolen due to widespread fraud, despite multiple audits and recounts finding no significant fraud and his own administration previously stating the election was clean.
When asked about presidential term limits, the AI responded, "The 22nd Amendment says that no person shall be elected President more than twice. Donald J. Trump has already been elected twice (2016 and 2024). I am not giving legal advice." This answer addresses Trump's past suggestions of seeking a third term, an action prohibited by the Constitution.
Further inquiries revealed that the AI identified the Pentagon as the "headquarters of the Department of Defense." This response contrasts with Trump's previous executive order aimed at rebranding the Department of Defense as the Department of War.
The chatbot also addressed climate change, stating that "Federal climate-science pages say recent warming is largely from human greenhouse-gas emissions, mainly burning fossil fuels. Earth’s climate has also changed for natural reasons over long periods." This aligns with scientific consensus, differing from Trump's past dismissals of climate change as a "hoax."
Regarding presidential salaries, the AI chatbot noted that "some presidents have declined to keep that pay," listing George Washington, Herbert Hoover, and John F. Kennedy. It also mentioned Trump, who has previously claimed to be the first president to forgo his salary, although records indicate other presidents have also declined their pay.
The website aims to consolidate information previously spread across various federal agency sites, utilizing AI to present answers drawn from official government data. However, the initial responses generated by the AI highlighted discrepancies with Trump's public statements on several key issues.
