The Trump administration has finalized a rule that limits the duration of student and journalist visas. Under the new regulation, F and J visa holders, typically for students, will be permitted to stay in the United States for the length of their academic program, with a maximum duration of four years. Previously, student visas were allowed to last for the entire duration of studies, plus up to three years after graduation for Optional Practical Training (OPT). This OPT period has been a critical phase for many graduates seeking employment, which could then lead to eligibility for longer-term H-1B visas.
The rule also shortens the grace period for F visa holders to depart or transfer schools and change their status after graduation. This period is reduced from 60 days to 30 days.
For journalists holding I visas, the duration will be capped at 240 days. This is a significant change from current rules, under which journalists' visas can be valid for years. For Chinese nationals holding I visas, the duration will be further limited to 90 days.
