Trump Administration Investigated Rep. Ilhan Omar With Aim to Strip Citizenship, Deport Her
The investigation reportedly focuses on allegations of misrecorded information related to her immigration.
The Trump administration has been conducting an investigation into U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) with the stated goal of stripping her of citizenship and deporting her from the country. The investigation reportedly centers on whether Omar or her family provided inaccurate information regarding her age when she immigrated to the United States as a minor.
Homeland Security officers reportedly raided Omar's Washington, D.C. home on Monday as part of this investigation. The probe is said to be examining allegations that her age was misrecorded to facilitate her path to citizenship. Omar, who came to the U.S. as a refugee at age 12 and became a citizen at 17, is a vocal critic of the current administration.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the investigation's explicit aim is to build a case for denaturalization, which would render her ineligible to hold public office and lead to her deportation.
Historically, the U.S. has rarely moved to strip citizenship from naturalized citizens. However, the Trump administration has reportedly made denaturalization a priority. According to NBC News reporting earlier this year, the Department of Justice was targeting hundreds of individuals for possible denaturalization, with aspirations to initiate hundreds of new cases monthly. Successfully revoking citizenship, however, remains a complex legal process requiring a court order.
This development represents a significant escalation in the administration's efforts to utilize the Justice Department against political opponents. Critics argue that such actions, even if they do not result in denaturalization, indicate a dangerous trend where the rights and protections afforded by citizenship could become contingent on the president's favor.
