Trump Administration Considers Firing Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle Amid Allegations
President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio are reportedly 'extremely pissed off' over reports of improper conduct by US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, with a decision on her future expected soon.
President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are reportedly considering the removal of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle following a series of reports detailing alleged improper conduct. A senior U.S. official described Trump and Rubio as "extremely pissed off" by the allegations and indicated a decision regarding Guilfoyle's position could be made this week, following the Columbus Day holiday.
Senator Rubio, who visited Athens last week and was reportedly greeted by Guilfoyle upon his arrival, has expressed increasing frustration as the allegations have multiplied. He has largely declined to comment publicly on the growing list of accusations, previously stating that "Our ambassador has been a strong ambassador here." However, after a fresh report emerged, Rubio pushed back against journalists inquiring about the matter, questioning the veracity of unconfirmed reports.
Vice President Vance also addressed the reports, calling them "hypothetical" but admitted he "doesn't love" what has been reported regarding her spending and expenses, while stating he did not know the full details.
The allegations, which began surfacing in The Wall Street Journal late last month, include claims of Guilfoyle threatening a host country official, accepting improper gifts and services, and offering to leverage her influence within the administration in exchange for the payment of a substantial credit card bill. The Journal reported that text messages indicated Guilfoyle had asked a Trump donor to cover a $100,000 credit card bill prior to her confirmation hearing, promising access to administration officials in return.
Further reports have detailed Guilfoyle's alleged rage over not being invited to an event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and boasting about luxury travel with energy company executives. The Daily Mail has also reported on complaints from staff at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, citing allegations of "tyrannical" leadership and lavish corporate perks.
Guilfoyle's lawyer has stated that she has done nothing wrong, and the U.S. Embassy in Athens has offered tacit support. The State Department has declined to comment on any potential investigation.
Congressional Democrats, including Representative Gregory Meeks and Senator Jeanne Shaheen, along with Representative Robert Garcia, have called for an investigation into Guilfoyle's conduct.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News personality, was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr. She was appointed ambassador to Greece after their public split, beginning her tenure in Athens with a blend of diplomatic engagements and public appearances.
The State Department's inspector general is reportedly looking into the allegations. While a formal investigation has not been confirmed, inspectors general often conduct preliminary inquiries into complaints, which can lead to disciplinary action or dismissal.
