Trump Administration Considers Baseball Stadium in Grand Teton National Park
Major League Baseball has reportedly approached the White House about constructing a stadium within the Wyoming park, drawing criticism from conservation groups.
The Trump administration is reportedly in discussions with Major League Baseball (MLB) regarding the potential construction of a stadium within Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. The proposal, aimed at hosting a special event similar to the successful "Field of Dreams" games, has prompted scouting visits to the park by a high-ranking National Park Service official.
MLB executives have initiated conversations with the White House to explore the feasibility of building a ballpark in Grand Teton, according to sources familiar with the matter. This initiative follows the league's success with three games played at a recreated cornfield in Iowa, inspired by the iconic baseball film.
While the White House stated the idea is not a presidential directive and not an administration priority, National Park Service Deputy Director Frank Lands has reportedly visited Grand Teton to scout potential locations for a stadium. County Commissioner Luther Propst confirmed meeting Lands at the park but denied discussing stadium construction, expressing strong opposition to the concept.
Conservationists have voiced significant concerns about the proposal. Betsy Buffington, a regional director for the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), called the idea "ludicrous" and "ridiculous," emphasizing Grand Teton's ecological importance as a habitat for numerous species, including bears, wolves, bison, elk, and pronghorn. The NPCA has previously criticized the Trump administration for policies perceived as detrimental to national parks and public lands.
Grand Teton National Park encompasses 310,000 acres and is known for its rich biodiversity. The NPCA has cited past actions, such as efforts to sell public lands adjacent to Zion National Park and reductions in protected land in Utah, as evidence of the administration's approach to conservation.
In 2025, former President Trump issued an executive order aimed at enhancing national parks, which directed the Department of the Interior to develop strategies for increasing revenue and rescinded diversity, equity, and inclusion requirements within the National Park Service. The permanence of any proposed stadium in Grand Teton remains unclear, though the "Field of Dreams" site in Iowa, initially temporary, has since been made permanent.
Hinchliffe Stadium, located within Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park in New Jersey, is currently the only stadium situated within a national park. Additionally, former Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt designated Wrigley Field as a National Historic Landmark in 2020.
