A video circulating online shows former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dancing in a Montreal hardware store, holding a toilet plunger. The impromptu dance occurred in a Home Hardware store on St-Laurent Street.
In the footage, shared by Xavier Trudeau, who performs music under the name Xav, the former prime minister is seen kicking up his heels and swaying his hips while brandishing the plunger. The song playing on the store's radio was identified as a track by Xavier.
Katy Perry, identified as Trudeau's girlfriend, was also present and filmed the scene. She is seen nodding along to the music and moving around the store. A store employee told the Montreal Gazette that Trudeau and Perry visited the shop with a single security guard and spent approximately 45 minutes shopping.
The video has drawn criticism from some online commenters who have expressed disapproval of Trudeau's actions, particularly in light of past political decisions and the economic state of Canada during his tenure. Comments included sentiments that the behavior was out of touch with Canadians' struggles and that it was embarrassing.
Trudeau resigned from his position as Prime Minister in 2025 following internal party dissent and low public approval ratings. He and Perry publicly debuted as a couple in October 2023, after Trudeau separated from his wife of 18 years, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau.
This is not the first time the couple has faced public scrutiny for their actions. In December, Perry received criticism for her attire during a photo opportunity with former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife. Additionally, in April, the couple was observed using plastic cups at Coachella, which critics noted was inconsistent with Trudeau's past policy banning single-use plastics while in office.
