Troy Aikman Reflects on Potential Departure from ESPN Amidst Feud with Joe Buck

Troy Aikman, currently in the final season of his contract with ESPN, has acknowledged a growing realization that his broadcasting career might be coming to an end. This introspection comes amid reports of tension with his broadcast partner, Joe Buck.

Aikman, 59, expressed his feelings in a recent interview, stating that for the first time in his career, he is truly appreciating his role in the booth. "As I'm into my last year at ESPN, I'm realizing that this is something that could very well be taken away from me," Aikman told Dallas Cowboys insider and YouTuber Mike Fisher. "For the first time, I'm realizing how much I really do – I've always enjoyed it. I've always known that. But until you risk having something taken away from you, I think sometimes you tend to maybe take things for granted."

He added, "And so, for the first time probably in my career, I'm realizing, you know, this is a great profession. It's been a great ride for me, and I hope it's not over. Time will tell. But, yeah. So, we'll see. I'm excited about what the rest of this year holds, and I'm excited to finally get back into the booth for a Super Bowl."

The three-time Super Bowl champion and former Cowboys quarterback hinted last week that contract negotiations had stalled. Sources have indicated that Aikman perceives "the writing is on the wall" regarding his future at ESPN.

Meanwhile, Joe Buck has signed a contract extension with ESPN, reportedly worth $108 million over six years. This new deal is reportedly at the center of a feud between the two commentators, who have worked together since 2002. A source told Puck that Buck "finally snapped" following weeks of Aikman allegedly becoming "increasingly cold, difficult, short, making comments."

According to a source, Buck confronted Aikman, saying, "Dude, are we really going to do this?" Aikman's alleged response was, "You f***ed me over!"

Buck reportedly apologized to the crew for his role in the confrontation, urging colleagues to "move forward" and "have a great year."

This year will conclude in 2027, when ESPN is scheduled to broadcast the Super Bowl. The potential separation of Aikman and Buck would mark the end of a 24-year broadcasting partnership that began at Fox Sports before moving to ESPN. While Buck's future at the network is secured, Aikman's remains uncertain. Reports suggest Aikman viewed Buck's undisclosed contract extension as an "ultimate act of betrayal."

Another source told Puck that the deal was finalized in May and kept quiet, with neither Aikman nor his talent agency informing him.

In September, Aikman expressed surprise on the "Sports Media with Richard Deitsch" podcast that his own contract status had not been confirmed before the season began. However, he has also indicated that a separation seems likely, telling Jimmy Traina last week that a "divorce 'just seems to be where they're going.'"

Looking ahead, Aikman has suggested he might explore opportunities in NFL front offices, similar to his recent advisory role with the Miami Dolphins. He also mentioned focusing on his new brewery, Eight Beer. "I'm still young. I feel great," Aikman said. "I do feel there's another frontier. Maybe that's Eight Beer. Maybe that's what that is. Maybe it's a continuation of broadcasting with some other network, which would be exciting to me. Maybe it's doing some work with an organization. I really enjoyed the time that I spent with the Miami Dolphins this past offseason. Maybe there could be something there if nothing comes about in broadcasting."

Although Buck is not an investor in Eight Beer, he has appeared in advertisements for the company, some of which remain posted on the brand's Instagram page.
