Troy Aikman Hints at ESPN Departure Amid Contract Uncertainty
The veteran broadcaster acknowledged tension with Joe Buck and expressed openness to exploring future opportunities.
Troy Aikman has acknowledged tension with his longtime broadcast partner Joe Buck, stemming from Aikman's unresolved contract situation with ESPN. Aikman, whose contract is set to expire after the Super Bowl, stated on a radio appearance that he is looking forward to seeing "where my next landing spot may be."
This comes after reports surfaced of a pre-game argument between Aikman and Buck on Monday in Los Angeles, prior to calling the Bills' overtime win against the Rams. Buck, who recently signed a six-year, $108 million contract extension with ESPN, reportedly initiated a conversation with Aikman about the contract dispute.
Aikman confirmed that he has not yet discussed a new contract with ESPN leadership. "I’ll broadcast through this season and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens," Aikman said on 96.7 The Ticket, according to the Dallas Morning News.
ESPN had reportedly planned to address Aikman's contract after the Super Bowl, a timeline that differs from Buck's recent extension. The network brought Buck and Aikman into the "Monday Night Football" booth in 2022, aiming to stabilize their broadcast team after several years of flux. Aikman's potential departure could introduce new uncertainty into the booth, with other prominent broadcasters like Greg Olsen and Tony Romo also facing uncertain futures with their respective networks.
