Tropical Storms Fay and Odalys Form in Atlantic and Pacific
A new tropical storm, Fay, has formed in the northern Atlantic, while Tropical Storm Odalys strengthens southwest of Mexico.
Tropical Storm Fay formed Sunday in the northern Atlantic Ocean, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph). The storm was located approximately 405 miles (650 kilometers) southwest of the Azores. The National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued no coastal watches or warnings, and Fay is expected to dissipate by the end of the week.
Separately, Tropical Storm Odalys has developed southwest of Mexico's west coast. With current maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph), Odalys is moving west-northwest at 10 mph (17 kph). Forecasters anticipate it will strengthen into a hurricane within the next day or so. The storm's center is located about 1,345 miles (2,160 kilometers) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.
As with Fay, there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect for Tropical Storm Odalys. Fay's maximum sustained winds were previously clocked at 45 mph (75 kph) and were expected to increase in the short term. The storm was moving north-northeast at 5 mph (7 kph). The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal situated about 800 miles (1,287 kilometers) off the coast of mainland Portugal.
