Tribute to Fallen Officer Mia Lay Highlights Sacrifice and Friendship

The close friend of Constable Mia Lay, a 20-year-old officer who died when her police patrol car crashed into a tree in Sydney, has shared an emotional tribute. Elka Summer remembered her friend as courageous and passionate, emphasizing the profound void left by her passing.

Constable Lay died instantly when the police vehicle she was a passenger in collided with a tree in Redfern at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Friday. The car, driven by 24-year-old Constable Brandon Torrisi, was responding to an urgent report of a stolen vehicle.

Ms. Summer posted a series of photos on Instagram, recalling shared moments from high school, beach holidays, and celebrations, including Constable Lay's police academy graduation in 2025. "Beautiful, beautiful Mia, how much fun we've had together," Ms. Summer wrote. "Last May I watched you threw your cap into air as you graduated from the police academy and began a new chapter, which I believe was just the beginning of you truly falling in love with life."

Constable Lay's father, Clem Lay, stated that his daughter had been considering joining the NSW Police Force's Dog Squad, following in the footsteps of an aunt who is a senior officer. He mentioned that Mia had met "the love of her life," Officer Dan Vasquez, stationed in Sydney's eastern suburbs, and was enjoying her time in the force.

"She's always been a sporty child, blessed with athletic ability. She's always happy all the time, full of life," Mr. Lay said of his daughter. "She was very strong-willed."

Regarding the crash, Mr. Lay expressed his hope that no one would be found "at fault." He added, "If the investigation is done correctly and in detail, that's all I could ever ask. I don't know what to say about that speed. I just looked at pictures of the car and the shape of the car and thought, yeah, that makes sense."

Multiple police sources indicated that the vehicle was traveling at speeds exceeding 150 km/h at the time of the collision. Crash investigators are working to determine the cause of the incident, and police have not ruled out charging Constable Torrisi if he is found to have been driving unnecessarily fast. The NSW Police watchdog has stated it will monitor the force's investigation to uphold public confidence.

A fundraiser established in Constable Lay's memory has garnered over $28,000, intended to support her family and siblings during their period of grief and to alleviate financial pressures.
