A triathlete preparing for an Ironman competition narrowly escaped a life-threatening alligator attack while swimming in the Savannah River near the Georgia-South Carolina border. Jonathan Bruney was engaged in a low-heart-rate training session with a group of athletes he coaches when the incident occurred.

Bruney described initially mistaking the alligator for a log as it bumped his right elbow. The realization that it was a large, dangerous reptile led to immediate panic, as he understood the potential for severe injury. "This thing's big enough to barrel roll and rip the arm off if I don't get away quickly," Bruney recounted.

Recalling a tactic from television shows about animal behavior, Bruney resorted to a quick-thinking maneuver. After initial punches proved ineffective, he swam up the alligator's snout and squeezed its eye, causing the creature to release him.

Fortunately, none of the athletes Bruney was coaching were harmed during the encounter, as they quickly exited the water. A bystander contacted emergency services while one of Bruney's friends used a buoy cord to help control the bleeding from Bruney's arm before paramedics arrived.

Police and ambulance personnel responded promptly. Bruney received initial treatment at the scene before being transported for further care. Despite the traumatic experience, Bruney has been medically cleared to compete in his upcoming event and stated he has no reservations about returning to the water for future training.
