Three men have gone on trial in Mexico for the alleged murders of two Australian brothers and their American friend in 2024. The bodies of Callum Robinson, his younger brother Jake, and their friend Carter Rhoad from California were discovered at the bottom of a well with gunshot wounds to their heads. The victims, all in their early 30s, had disappeared during a surf trip in Baja California.
Prosecutors are seeking jail sentences exceeding 200 years for the defendants, Jesús "El Kekas" Gerardo, Irineo Francisco, and Ángel Jesús. They also face charges of violent robbery and auto theft. The parents of the Robinson brothers were present in court in the coastal town of Ensenada, stating it was "incredibly important and overwhelmingly difficult." Martin and Debra Robinson released a statement asserting, "We want the men accused of murdering our sons to see, in person, the human consequences of what happened. Callum and Jake were not simply victims in a case file - they were our sons, deeply loved by their family and friends, with lives, dreams and futures that were brutally taken away."
During the opening day of the trial, the accused were moved to a smaller courtroom following accusations that witnesses had been intimidated by individuals associated with the defendants. Dozens of witnesses are expected to testify over the course of the four-week, judge-only trial.
The 2024 killings of the Robinson brothers and Rhoad generated shock among Australians and residents of Ensenada, a town typically considered peaceful. Despite the prevalence of cartel violence in northern Mexican border states, violent attacks targeting tourists are uncommon in Baja California's surf towns.
Last year, Ari Gisell, the ex-girlfriend of one of the accused, became the first person convicted in connection with the tourists' murders. She received a 20-year prison sentence for her role in the crimes. Mexican prosecutors are pursuing sentences of more than 200 years for each of the current defendants, with an additional 168-year sentence sought for the alleged ringleader.
Prosecutors contend the victims were killed during a botched robbery, while the defense maintains there is insufficient evidence to support this theory. Callum Robinson was a member of Australia's national lacrosse team and had been a professional lacrosse player living in San Diego. His brother Jake had traveled from Australia for the surf trip and was scheduled to begin a medical position upon his return. Rhoad was killed a few months before his planned wedding.
