Trey Nyoni Eyes Premier League Start, Cites Thiago as Inspiration
The 19-year-old midfielder expresses confidence and gratitude for his manager's trust as Liverpool faces Brentford.
Nineteen-year-old Trey Nyoni is in contention for his first Premier League start for Liverpool this Saturday against Brentford. Nyoni, who recently impressed in Liverpool's 6-3 victory over LASK, models his composed midfield play after former Anfield player Thiago.
"For me, I always watch players like Thiago. For me, Thiago, yeah, he is the guy!" Nyoni stated, reflecting on his inspiration. The young midfielder expressed a lack of nerves, attributing his confidence to extensive preparation and the trust placed in him by manager Andoni Iraola.
"I don’t feel nervous at all, I don’t get nervous," Nyoni said. "With all the hard work I have put in to get to this moment and position, no. I just want to show the manager and everyone what I can do, show the fans what I can do."
He added that Iraola has provided significant trust and responsibility, helping him adapt to a new midfield position. "The manager has given me a lot of trust. He has given me so much responsibility. Ever since he came in, he has tried to make my life easy. He is helping a lot to adapt to the new position I am playing right now. I still have a lot of work to keep improving but right now I feel good."
Nyoni is one of several young players being given opportunities under Iraola. Teammate Rio Ngumoha, 18, has also earned regular starts and is noted for his strong one-on-one abilities. Iraola commented on Ngumoha's development, stating, "He knows he is elite at certain things. If you want to put someone one versus one then Rio is one of the best players you would choose because he is difficult to contain. There are areas he has to improve, especially without the ball."
Forward Lewis Koumas is also recognized for his off-the-ball work and team play. He noted the positive impact of young players getting chances: "There is a buzz and it gives us all a motivation to keep going. We are getting chances but, ultimately, it is because we are good enough."
Koumas also shared his thoughts on missing a key chance in a recent match against Manchester City. "I couldn’t really sleep (after). I just kept thinking about the chance, to be honest. I feel like I couldn’t have hit it any better. The keeper (Gianluigi Donnarumma) is huge and he was just in the right place and I think in normal circumstances it goes in."
With Ryan Gravenberch suspended and Dominik Szoboszlai a doubt for the upcoming match against Brentford, Nyoni's potential inclusion in the starting lineup is seen as a logical step following his performance against LASK.
