Veteran San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams expressed strong approval for rookie defensive tackle Gracen Halton following the team's preseason opener. Williams, entering his 17th season, described the fourth-round draft pick as a "breath of fresh air" and noted his explosive power and impressive performance.

Halton, a "Boomer Sooner" from Oklahoma, was a standout on the defensive side of the ball during the game. Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris also expressed satisfaction with the performance of many young players, including Halton, stating, "A lot of young guys making plays... I was really fired up about all those guys."

Despite a defensive holding penalty negating a particularly dominant play where Halton overwhelmed an opponent who had recently signed a significant contract, Morris focused on the execution. "How it was executed I was more pleased with," Morris said.

The 49ers' defensive line faced challenges in the previous season, ranking last in the NFL with 20 sacks. With key pass rushers Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams sidelined by injuries, the depth of the defensive line was tested. However, the addition of rookies like Halton and Romello Height has bolstered the unit. Williams commented on the increased depth, noting the transition from playing practice squad players to having a more competitive group.

Halton's energy and work ethic were also highlighted. Williams found the rookie's enthusiasm beneficial, stating, "going into year 17, 38 years old, that enthusiasm don’t really come natural no more. … It gives me a breath of fresh air." Morris added that Halton is an eager worker, attentive to coaching, and brings consistent energy.

Other rookies also made notable contributions in the preseason opener. Ephesians Prysock, who played the most snaps among defensive players, made an impact with his coverage in the red zone. Jaden Dugger, a fifth-round pick, demonstrated athleticism in the newly created "Fever backer" position, immediately making a tackle on the second play of the game.
