Trendy Birmingham Suburb Labeled 'Slum' Amid Crime and Vandalism

Digbeth, a Birmingham suburb once lauded as 'Britain's coolest neighbourhood' and a burgeoning creative hub, is now described by some residents as a crime-ridden 'slum.' The area gained prominence after Steven Knight, creator of the series Peaky Blinders, established a studio there in October 2025, where parts of the show and its associated film were shot. Its transformation was further bolstered by multi-million pound investments and positive recognition, including being named one of the best places to live by the Sunday Times.

Despite these developments, including the upcoming BBC flagship HQ at The Tea Factory as part of a £69.3 million project, locals report a significant decline in the area's condition. Residents describe Digbeth as an eyesore marred by vandalism and dumped rubbish, with an increasing number of criminal activities and fly-tipping incidents.

"It's been a double-edged sword with the regeneration as it has sort of torn the heart out of Digbeth," said Natalie Freeman, 39, who works in the Custard Factory, a hub for independent businesses. "The smaller independents are having to move out due to rising costs and parts of the area have become increasingly run-down and dangerous at night."

Freeman also highlighted the pervasive graffiti problem, distinguishing it from the area's past street art culture. "The graffiti issue is a massive problem - it was always just street art but vandals just tag away with no repercussions now and almost every street is covered in it. There's never anybody to stop them either," she stated. The issue extends to fly-tipping, with rubbish and even vehicle parts frequently dumped in the streets. "People just dump rubbish all the time as well. It's pretty grim to be honest in parts and I don't feel that safe at night sometimes," Freeman added.

The area has also seen a concerning rise in violent crime. The John F Kennedy mosaic, a landmark since 1968, was recently defaced. The suburb has also been the site of several fatal stabbings, including the murder of Cody Fisher, 23, at the Crane nightclub on Boxing Day 2022, and the unsolved murder of Jinming Zhang, 41, earlier that year. Another fatality involved Ashley Day, 20, who was fatally stabbed at a party in 2021.

One office worker, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed concern for their family's safety, stating, "I won't let my daughters come into town anymore and Digbeth has started attracting the wrong crowd. It used to be one of the best nights out in the city but it's not safe. It looks a right dump in parts now."

Locals suggest that the regeneration efforts, aimed at making Digbeth a leading creative and media hub, have overlooked the existing community. "When you redevelop an area you've got to work with and support who is currently there but they haven't so it sort of kills the vibe which made Digbeth special in the first place," one resident commented. The ongoing 20-year regeneration project is intended to transform the area across 11 development sites, with West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker having previously vowed it would surpass Salford's Media City.

Online reactions to images of the defaced JFK mosaic mirrored these sentiments. One social media user posted on X, "Such a shame. Remember when street art and murals were treated with respect... Kennedy mosaic in Digbeth covered by graffiti. Why cannot we all take pride in the places we grow up in?" Another commented, "The whole of Digbeth is a disgrace. Graffiti everywhere.."
