Tremaine Edmunds Out for Season with Shoulder Injury, Giants Face Depth Test
The Giants will be without their starting inside linebacker for the remainder of the season due to a right shoulder injury, forcing other players to step up.
The New York Giants will finish the season without starting inside linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who suffered a season-ending right shoulder injury late in last week's game against the Saints. This setback tests the team's depth at the position, a point the Giants' coaching staff has emphasized throughout the season.
Edmunds, who played every defensive snap in the team's first six games, will miss the final 11 contests. This injury adds to a series of significant losses for the Giants, who have already seen quarterback Jaxson Dart, edge rusher Brian Burns, and now Edmunds, their leading tackler and defensive signal-caller, sustain season-ending injuries.
Despite the blow, the Giants anticipate relying on their established depth at inside linebacker. Micah McFadden, who was re-signed in the offseason with the intention of starting alongside Edmunds, is expected to see increased snaps. McFadden has started 36 career games and was slated to be a starter before the Giants drafted rookie Arvell Reese in the first round. McFadden has played only two defensive snaps this season, with Edmunds and Reese largely dominating playing time.
"I think I said early on, ‘We have three starters,’" head coach John Harbaugh said. "Micah is ready. He’s a starter, and he’ll play really well. He’ll be excited for his opportunity."
McFadden is the likely candidate to assume the communication role on defense, taking over the green-dot helmet responsibilities from Edmunds. Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson noted that McFadden, along with Reese, Zaire Barnes, and rookie Jack Kelly, had opportunities to call defensive plays during the preseason.
McFadden's return to a prominent role comes after his own season was cut short last year by a Lisfranc foot injury, limiting him to 11 snaps. "He was flying around (in the preseason),” Wilson said of McFadden. “He was making a whole bunch of plays. He can play pass coverage, he can blitz. When the ball breaks (free), he goes and gets it down. He’s a sideline-to-sideline guy. He’s a starter in the NFL that was just playing his role. If he has a bigger role, he’ll be ready for it. He’s done it at a high level."
Edmunds sustained his injury during a tackle attempt on a Saints running back Kendre Miller. He was able to return for the final play of the game, a kneel down, after the initial injury occurred.
McFadden has also played a significant role on special teams this season. Special teams coordinator Chris Horton praised McFadden's contributions, noting his effort, physicality, and communication. "He’s been awesome for the room," Horton stated. "I’ve been excited to have him out there because the kind of effort he plays with, the kind of physicality he plays with, the communication that he brings. He’s a guy that can play multiple positions on all different phases. He’s a great coach for the younger guys."
Edmunds' contract includes a guarantee for almost his entire $11.85 million salary next season, providing some financial security for the injured linebacker.
