A massive tree collapsed onto a home in Westbury, Long Island, on Monday evening, trapping nearly three dozen foster cats within the damaged structure. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. during intense storms.

The 70-year-old tree fell onto the Oakdale Drive residence, narrowly missing homeowner Wendy Kimball's brother, who was napping in his bedroom. Kimball reported that her brother, a patient recovering from a stroke and cancer, was grazed by the tree but sustained only minor injuries. The family was able to evacuate the home safely.

Following the incident, Kimball contacted multiple animal rescue groups to assist in saving the cats, whom she fosters for rehabilitation. Rescuers arrived on the scene prepared with carriers and traps.

By early Tuesday morning, approximately two dozen cats remained trapped inside the home, which the Town of North Hempstead subsequently declared unsafe to occupy due to structural damage. A town spokesperson stated that an engineer's report is pending to assess the building's condition and determine safe access protocols.

Kimball expressed deep concern for the cats, particularly two named Yogi and Baby Hope. She noted the tree held sentimental value, having been planted by her father, and that she had previously considered its removal but hesitated due to its familial connection. "Anybody who’s an animal lover would understand that they’re my children, and they’re the reason I get up every day," Kimball told WABC.
