Treasury to Auto-Enroll 60 Million Children in College Savings Accounts

The Treasury Department announced it will begin automatically enrolling approximately 60 million children into federal college savings accounts, a significant change from the previous system that required parents or guardians to sign up.
This new auto-enrollment structure is designed to increase participation in the program, which aims to provide a financial head start for future educational expenses. Under the prior model, families had to actively register to establish an account for their child.
The shift to an opt-out system means that accounts will be created by default, and parents or guardians will have the option to decline participation if they choose. This approach is intended to overcome the inertia or lack of awareness that may have prevented some families from enrolling in the past.
