Travis Kelce Faces Backlash for Liking Controversial Shane Gillis SNL Monologue
NFL star's social media activity sparks outrage online over comedian's 'misogynistic' jokes.
NFL player Travis Kelce is facing significant criticism on social media after he liked a post featuring a monologue by comedian Shane Gillis from a recent Saturday Night Live episode. Gillis, who guest-hosted the show, made jokes about women at the gym, which many online deemed misogynistic.
Gillis's monologue included remarks such as female gymgoers "just dress like ws now." Kelce's subsequent 'like' of the clip on SNL's official Instagram page drew immediate condemnation on platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Users branded Kelce with terms like "ddbag frat bro" and "disgusting man."
Some online commentary extended to Kelce's relationship with singer Taylor Swift, with one user writing, "Taylor, is this your king?? Come get your man girl." Others were more critical of Swift herself.
Kelce's representatives have been contacted for comment. While many condemned the action, some offered defenses, suggesting Kelce might not have watched the video closely and simply liked it as content from the SNL page. One user proposed, "Or maybe he didn’t watch the video at all and just liked it because it’s SNL. Not everyone is chronically online."
This incident is not the first time Gillis has been involved in controversy. He was hired by Saturday Night Live in 2019 but was fired shortly after due to resurfaced clips of his podcast containing racially charged and homophobic remarks. At that time, Gillis stated he was a "comedian who pushes boundaries" and offered apologies to those offended.
In his recent monologue, Gillis also described activewear as "neon" and "artificial bait-colored," with shorts that "go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole." He joked about the shorts and the attention they might draw from men.
Following Gillis's monologue, "Schitt's Creek" star Dan Levy denounced the jokes in an Instagram video, stating, "Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them ws. It makes the men calling them ws misogynists. There’s a difference there." SNL alumna Ego Nwodim also responded with her own humor, posting a gym selfie with the caption "w reporting for duty."
Kelce and Gillis have a prior connection, as Gillis was a guest at Kelce's annual Tight End University training camp in June. Videos from the event show Kelce greeting Gillis warmly and referring to them as "friends." Gillis also introduced Kelce to his father.
