Travis Kelce was recorded expressing his dissatisfaction with a new NFL measurement system during the Kansas City Chiefs' final preseason game. The tight end was caught on a hot mic complaining about the league's shift to virtual measurements, a change implemented in the offseason.
During the game against the Seattle Seahawks, officials were observed using a new virtual system to determine first downs. When referee Bill Vinovich explained they were using "virtual measurement just to check the technology," Kelce was heard shouting from the huddle, "Man, bring the chains back, man. This is some bull****."
The league has replaced the traditional chain gang with Sony's Hawk-Eye system. This technology will now be used to determine whether the ball has reached the line to gain. While the chain gang will remain present on the sidelines to indicate downs and distances, the virtual system is now responsible for the actual measurement.
NFL officials estimate that this technological update could save approximately 40 seconds per measurement. Despite the potential efficiency gains, Kelce's reaction suggests a preference for the older, more familiar method.
Kelce, who is entering his 14th NFL season, also spoke about the Chiefs' offense. He expressed confidence in the team, highlighting the contributions of younger players like Xavier Worthy and the leadership of quarterback Patrick Mahomes in preparing the receiving corps for the upcoming season.
