Hannah Stephenson, 31, experienced what she described as a "horrible realization" after staying at the Travelodge on Newmarket Road in Cambridge on July 26. She woke the following morning to discover more than 100 itchy red lumps across her body and noticed blood spots on the bedding. Ms. Stephenson, who had been sightseeing and visiting pubs in the city, had booked the one-night stay to avoid the cost of a taxi home.

"It wasn't until I saw the blood and the bugs that I realised what had happened," Stephenson stated. "I woke up feeling itchy and I started to have lumps forming on my arms. When I got up, I saw spots of blood on the pillow and black dots. I looked closer and I actually saw a bug on the pillow. I checked the bedding and there were more in the bedding."

She reported counting 37 bites on her left hand alone, noting that the total number was well over 100 and caused significant itching. The incident left her feeling "horrified and shocked," as she had considered Travelodge to be a reliable hotel chain. Almost two weeks after her stay, the swelling had subsided, but her skin remained visibly marked, leading to self-consciousness and a decision to avoid social events.

Mm Stephenson said she felt "ignored" when she initially complained to the hotel and believes the company only contacted her after she posted about the bites on TikTok. "I don't think I would be at this point at the moment if I didn't take it to TikTok," she commented.

Travelodge issued an apology, stating they were "deeply sorry for Ms. Stephenson's experience and how distressing an incident like this can be." The company has offered her £2,000 in compensation. Ms. Stephenson accepted the compensation but expressed a hope that the company would implement more vigilant measures against bed bugs in the future. She mentioned that after living in various countries without encountering bed bugs, she did not expect such an issue in Cambridge.

According to the British Association of Dermatologists, bed bugs can be present even in clean environments and their bites can sometimes be mistaken for those of other insects. Symptoms typically include red spots, potential blisters, and swelling, with bites usually healing within about a week, though secondary skin infections can occur in rare cases. Travelodge stated that customer safety is a priority and that they employ preventative measures and expert-led pest control when issues are reported, taking affected rooms out of service for inspection and treatment.
