Travellers Establish Encampment in North London Playing Fields
At least 12 caravans and numerous vehicles have been pitched on Muswell Hill playing fields, prompting resident complaints.
A group of travellers has set up an encampment on football pitches in a North London suburb, parking at least 12 caravans and numerous other vehicles. The site, located at Muswell Hill playing fields near the Coldfall Wood nature reserve, has drawn complaints from local residents.
Drone footage of the encampment shows cars with both British and Irish number plates present. Signs of makeshift fires and discarded litter have been observed on the playing fields. This is not the first time travellers have used this site; locals reported a similar arrival with 15 caravans and horses in August of the previous year. At that time, residents accused the travellers of 'antagonising' behaviour and called for greater consideration regarding rubbish disposal.
The area of Muswell Hill is known for its affluent residents, with detached homes averaging £1.5 million in the past year. The playing fields are managed by Haringey Borough Council, which is reportedly aware of the current encampment. Police were observed in the vicinity, though it remains unclear if an eviction notice has been issued.
Travellers have cited a nationwide shortage of official sites and the 'stigma' faced by their communities as reasons for roadside encampments. This incident follows a series of similar events across the UK.
In Buckinghamshire, a traveller camp that had been quietly established was ordered to leave after councillors denied retrospective planning permission, despite recommendations from planners who cited a shortfall in official pitches. Locals had raised concerns about intimidation and the potential for more illegal sites. In Berkshire, a group was ordered to leave an illegal site near the Aldermaston nuclear weapons facility after building 13 static homes. Additionally, travellers established an illegal camp in Hillam, North Yorkshire, reportedly within 48 hours by arriving late on a Friday when council offices were closing.
