Travel Influencer and Two Women Die After Truck Swept Away in Nicaragua River
A driver survived after attempting to cross a swollen river during heavy rains, according to local reports.
A 24-year-old French travel influencer, Emma Marie Laurent, died along with two other women when their pickup truck was swept away by a swelling river in northern Nicaragua. The incident occurred on October 9, during heavy rainfall.
The group was attempting to cross the Nahualapa River when the vehicle was overcome by the current. The driver of the Toyota Hilux, Martin Gerardo Garcia Giron, was the sole survivor, authorities told La Prensa.
Laurent, who had a significant online following and documented her van-life and travel adventures, was exploring Nicaragua with two other women, identified as 20-year-old Swiss national Noe Luscher and 19-year-old Nicaraguan hotel worker Karen Lopez Montano. All three perished in the incident.
Nicaragua’s co-president, Rosario Murillo, commented on the dangers of such crossings, stating, “Rivers are deceptive. You think they are calm and suddenly the current comes and we have tragedies like this.”
Laurent, who described herself online as a “barefoot BFF,” had previously shared posts reflecting on her life and travels across Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Her last social media post prior to the incident was shared from Portugal on September 26, where she wrote about the importance of appreciating the world around oneself.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the truck's capsizing. It remains unclear if the driver will face charges.
