Transgender Woman Charged in Fatal Stabbing After Alleged Bathroom Mockery
Prosecutors say the suspect attacked a stranger, leaving part of the knife in his skull, after the victim reportedly made comments about her gender.
A transgender woman has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man on Chicago’s Far South Side. The alleged attack occurred after the suspect, identified as Kelly Day, 32, was reportedly mocked for using a women’s bathroom at a McDonald’s earlier in the day.
Authorities stated that Larry Young, 50, approached Day and her partner, who were with her 7-year-old stepson, and made comments about her gender. According to Assistant State Attorney Sara Grgurovic, this led to an argument, during which Young reportedly pushed Day before walking away toward a gas station. Prosecutors claim Day became “extremely angry” and told her partner she did not want “bullies” to get away with making fun of her gender.
Surveillance footage captured Day holding a knife above Young, who was on the ground, and subsequently stabbing him approximately 13 times in the head, neck, and upper shoulders. The Chicago Tribune reported that the knife broke during the assault, with a portion of the blade found later in Young’s skull.
Day then called 911, initially claiming she had been injured while defending herself from a “pervert.” However, she later changed her story in a subsequent call, stating she had cut herself while cooking. She was arrested at a city hospital where she sought treatment for a finger injury. Prosecutors noted that Day's initial account of the incident differed from witness statements and surveillance evidence.
An autopsy confirmed that Young died from multiple sharp force injuries. Day has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held in custody pending trial, with the brutality of the attack cited as a factor. She is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.
