Bodycam footage released on Feb. 5, 2025, captured a confrontation between a transgender University of Central Florida (UCF) student and campus police that led to the student's arrest. The incident, which occurred after police responded to reports of a student involved in a verbal altercation with juveniles, escalated when the student accused an officer of misgendering him.
In the video, the student, identified as Jarrett Vick, can be heard shouting at an officer. When warned that he could be placed in a Baker Act facility for experiencing a mental health crisis, the student responded defiantly. The situation intensified when the officer referred to the student as "he." The student immediately objected, demanding, "She! She! Just say the right pronoun!"
The pronoun dispute continued as officers attempted to handcuff Vick. An officer warned, "I’m gonna spray him," before deploying pepper spray. The student, enraged, yelled, "Don't say him!" The officer then stated, "Okay, her. I’m going to spray her," as the scuffle continued.
Amid the altercation, the student pleaded with a nearby university administrator for assistance, asking them to "just tell them to use the right pronouns" and stating it was causing distress. The student resisted orders to get on the ground, was eventually tased and handcuffed, and placed in a patrol vehicle. One officer can be heard remarking that the student threw a closed fist, grabbed an officer's microphone, and kicked an officer.
Vick was arrested and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting an officer with violence. According to Orange County records, the cases are closed, and the student pleaded not guilty to the charges. A UCF Police Department spokesperson indicated that Vick was enrolled at the university in spring 2025 but is not a current student and did not graduate from the school.
