Trans Athlete Debate Surfaces at WNBA Finals Amid Confrontation

The WNBA's ongoing debate surrounding transgender athlete participation in women's sports was reignited Saturday during Game 1 of the WNBA Finals between the Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream. Multiple attendees wearing apparel with the slogan 'XX-XY' were reportedly subjected to verbal abuse and confrontations by other fans at the Chase Center.

XX-XY Athletics, an organization that opposes the inclusion of transgender athletes in women's sports, was represented at the game by its founder, Jennifer Sey. Sey shared a video on social media documenting some of the incidents, which she stated occurred while her group was being escorted by arena staff.

The video footage showed at least one fan directing abusive language and gestures towards Sey's group. In one instance, a fan was heard shouting, "You're disgusting! You're disgusting! Kill yourself." Another individual was seen waving goodbye to the group as they were being escorted away. Arena staff informed Sey that their presence was called into question due to complaints of antagonism from other fans, but the group was permitted to return to their seats without further disciplinary action.

Sey stated on social media that she is "just a lady who gets yelled at everywhere I go. They always hope I die. Because I think men can't be women." This incident follows Sey's recent claims that the FBI is investigating threats made against her and her employees. In an article published by the Daily Wire, Sey detailed instances of serious threats, including descriptions of potential harm to her, her team, and their children, as well as a disturbing encounter at her company's offices where a man reportedly entered with apparent malicious intent.

The controversy also coincides with WNBA star Sophie Cunningham's public support for a group of high school girls who protested competing against a transgender runner. Cunningham had previously expressed a desire to "protect young girls... who shouldn't have to go against biological men."

Separately, during the same game, fans expressed discontent as players from both the Dream and Valkyries were not present on the court during the performance of the national anthem. The players returned shortly after the anthem concluded.
